Indonesian reefs excite
scientists
'Coral researchers have revealed the location
of what they think is the most valuable cluster of reefs in the world. It is in a remote archipelago off
Indonesia, close to the coast of Papua Province, in the Malacca Sea'
BBC News - May 15, 2002. |
Previous experience: During the summer months of 2001, SEAL
pioneered two extremely successful dive expeditions in to a remote and little known area called the 'Raja
Ampat' in Irian Jaya. What we discovered went far and beyond our wildest hopes!
 |
The Raja Ampat comprises of five main islands, these being Waigeo,
Gam, Gag, Kawe and Batanta Island. With in excess of another hundred of so smaller islands and islets, we
surmised that the countless reefs, pinnacles and undersea mounts of this unexplored region had to hold some
very special diving. |

Coral Reef Paradise Found in Remote Indonesian Islands.
‘Scuba divers take note: The waters of the Raja Ampat Islands off
Indonesia’s province of Irian Jaya may replace heralded Palau as the most species-rich sea in the
world.
An international team of marine biologists who visited the Raja Ampat recently to examine the reefs said
they found what may be an unparalleled array of species – corals, fishes, and mollusks –
including some species never seen before’
National Geographic News – Aug 8, 2001. |
The islands of the Raja Ampat are extremely picturesque and
diverse in their geological make up. Ranging from shear-sided granite islands, similar in appearance
to Palau, to small coral sand bays and islets, resembling those of the Maldives. The waters of the
Raja Ampat are crystal clear, with a deep blue azure appearance. If you can imagine a South Pacific
dream location, this is it! |
