Surfing in India
(The Andaman Islands)

SEAL are the pioneers of surfing in the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal, India. Our unique live-aboard sailing cruises are for big wave surfing around these tropical islands. Bring your surfboard and join one of our sailing yachts in Port Blair, capital of the Andaman Islands, for an unforgettable experience of World-class surfing.

"Geographic isolation, heavily restricted travel, mysterious stone age culture and totally uncharted waters - the Andaman Islands are everything you want in a surf trip". SURFER Magazine 1998.

The remote Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal had, until April 1998, never been surfed. It was at this time that our yacht 'Crescent' was chartered by some of the world's top surfing names to explore the Andamans in the hope of finding good surf. The trip was highly successful. World-class surf was found!

Surfing Impressions from SEAL

Take a look at "Quest For Fire" (Surfing Magazine USA 1998) by Sam George/ photos by John Callahan - shown on our 'Press Coverage' page. This is just one of many surfing articles written about our trip, in the world's leading surfing magazines.

During the months of April and May 1999 we started a Surfing from SEALschedule of liveaboard surfing charters to  the Andaman Islands, providing an opportunity for people to be amongst the very first to ride these World-class waves. Word spread in the surfing world and demand grew.

Getting There

Guests must fly in and fly out. Pls. note: all guests must obtain an Indian tourist Visa prior to arrival in India.

THE ANDAMAN ISLANDS, INDIA

To the west lay the Maldives, to the east, Burma & Thailand. Centred in the Bay of Bengal are the mysterious Andaman Islands. A chain of one hundred and fifty lush tropical islands, forgotten by the modern world. So little explored and undeveloped, that cannibals and stone-age pigmy Negrito tribes still exist in the islands impenetrable interiors. These reclusive tribes, hunt wild boar and deer as their main source of food.

Visiting working elephants in the jungle logging camps is another little highlight of these trips. You may well see them swimming from one island to another with the mahouts aboard!

To capture the true spirit of the Andamans and to enjoy its rustic charm is only possible, by spending a day or so exploring Port Blair, the Islands capital port. A visit to the Cellular jail or nearby Ross Island will give a lasting impression or British imperial rule in bygone days. Port Blair has been in a reclusive state of decline since the British departed. It is now a colourful Indian backwater, Ideal for exploring.

The outer Islands of the Andaman Archipelago are the real gem for true adventures, holding hidden treasures for surfing enthusiasts.

The Andaman Island Archipelago is engulfed by the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean.
